Norwich Memorial Tattoo Case Study: Peregrine Falcon And Cathedral Tribute
How a first tattoo became a deeply personal memorial tribute through story-led design in Norwich.
Joseph Finnegan, 22, came to Cavalry Tattoo Studio for his first tattoo with a clear purpose. He wanted to honour his grandad, who passed away in 2017.
The concept came from a memory his family still holds close. His grandad loved watching the peregrine falcons at Norwich Cathedral, so we built the design around a falcon moving past the cathedral.
1) Client brief and emotional intent
For this piece, the brief was not based on trend or flash. The brief was memory and place.
Joseph said he trusted Siobhan to carry the meaning with care, especially because this was his first tattoo and carried significant emotional weight.
2) Symbol structure: peregrine falcon and Norwich Cathedral
Memorial tattoos become stronger when every visual element has a role:
- Primary focal element: peregrine falcon
- Secondary anchor: Norwich Cathedral
- Narrative link: a real habit and memory shared with family
This structure keeps the piece personal and avoids generic symbolism.
3) First tattoo planning and confidence
Because this was Joseph's first tattoo, consultation and pacing mattered as much as drawing:
- placement and scale were reviewed in detail
- contrast and readability were planned for long-term clarity
- session flow was explained step by step before tattooing
4) Technical execution in black and grey realism
Black and grey realism was chosen for depth, softness, and detail control. The goal was an artwork-led memorial piece that still reads clearly as skin settles over time.
After the session, healing guidance focused on protecting contrast and fine detail so the memory remains clear.

Why this case matters
This memorial case shows the value of story-led process:
- emotional context is captured before design starts
- local meaning is translated into visual structure
- technical choices are made for longevity, not short-term impact
