Tattoo Aftercare Guide: Healing Stages, Daily Steps, and Product Advice
A practical aftercare guide covering day-by-day healing, common concerns, and how to keep your tattoo looking clear long term.
Good aftercare protects linework, contrast, and detail. This guide gives you a clear routine you can return to during healing.
If you want the page version, you can also use the aftercare page.
Day 1 to 3: settle the skin
- Keep your initial bandage on for the timeframe advised at your appointment.
- Wash gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
- Pat dry with clean paper towel rather than rubbing.
- Apply a very thin layer of aftercare product.
- Avoid soaking the tattoo in baths, pools, or hot tubs.
Day 4 to 14: peeling and itch phase
- Flaking is normal and expected.
- Do not pick, scratch, or peel skin away.
- Continue cleaning and moisturising in light layers.
- Wear loose clothing over the area where possible.
- Keep friction low while the skin is still sensitive.
Week 2 onwards: long-term care
- Most tattoos settle across weeks three to four.
- Continue moisturising to support texture and clarity.
- Use SPF on healed tattoos in sunlight.
- Stay consistent with skin care so the work ages cleanly.
